Many People Around The World Keep Pets, And There Are Lots Of Different Types Of Pets All Of Which Require Different Levels Of Care

Apparently in the United Kingdom, over twenty five per cent of households possess a pet cat and about a third have a pet dog. The human requirement for the company of animals means that, over thousands of years, a number of species have been taken on as companions for humans which means that their behaviour is noticeably different from their wild relations.

It is this distinction that leads us to describe pets as domesticated, and why we are comfortable for cats, dogs, plus quite a few species of rodents and birds to live in our homes with us. Also, there are a number of species of wild animals which are also kept as pets sometimes, but their behaviour means that they need to be kept in conditions which protect the human owner from their pet’s wild instincts.

Keeping a pet is generally believed to provide the owner with recognised health benefits, as pets are in many cases able to decrease stress levels, and can boost the individual’s sense of self worth, as the pet depends upon the owner to provide the majority of its daily needs. Pets are also accepted to be of assistance to the elderly and for those with specific mental health complaints, as well as giving companionship to those who live on their own.

The domestic dog tends to be a loyal, trusting and sociable creature which will participate in games and fun, and with the right perseverance and training can be incredibly obedient. The huge variety of different breeds means that there is a pet dog for everyone - from the largest liveliest dog roaming a country estate to the most delicate little miniature breed often seen travelling in its celebrity owner’s designer bag! These spoilt Hollywood pooches probably have their own quarters, a chef to cook their food, a personal dental hygienist, a regular booking at the grooming parlour and an appointment for Laser eye surgery if need be!

Obviously, dogs can also be trained to support humans as well, as is the situation with guide dogs for the blind and hearing dogs for the deaf. To be able to train a canine to such a high standard that they can effectively take over as eyes or ears is an outstanding achievement. But I wonder what happens to guide dogs if they have vision problems or hearing dogs if they begin to go deaf – do they have Laser eye surgery or hearing aids?!

The domestic cat is a far different type of pet. Cats are usually confident, independent and firmly believe that their surroundings should be arranged to suit them above mere humans. (Would you believe that I’ve owned cats in the past?) But don’t let folk tell you that it isn’t possible to train a cat! Although I would define it as ‘educating’ instead of ‘training’ – it’s all about the psychology! Cats are much lower maintenance than dogs in that they don’t demand to be exercised every day and can take care of themselves somewhat better if you are away from home for more than a few hours. Whilst allowing them their freedom, I always insisted that they stayed indoors overnight – I couldn’t be doing with one of those cat flaps that makes use of a magnet or breaking a Laser eye beam or something like that to open and close it – I’m sure I would have found much more than just my own pets in the house!

Some people choose to keep rodents, such as rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and rats, all of which make great pets, although hamsters usually sleep during the day, so are not such a good idea for young children who want to interact with the animals during the day. Rodents have to reside in a cage (which should allow them plenty of room to act normally without being overcrowded), but some animals, such as rabbits, can be house trained and given the freedom to roam freely about the house. Also, ferrets can be housetrained and given the run of the house, and these mammals have become increasingly popular as house pets during the last twenty years or so. Personally, I would be worried about permitting small animals such as these to have the run of the house – I’d probably have|need|want[/spin] to aim Laser eye security beams across all exit points, as I’d be worried about them escaping and vanishing.

Some people also decide to have pet birds, from talkative parrots and mynah birds to cages of finches, canaries and such like. Again, species such as parrots can be allowed some freedom in the house if the owner wants, but I should say that personally I’ve never been a fan of birds as house pets, as keeping them in a cage is removing their freedom to show their instinctive behaviour and fly. (And yes, I know the same thing could be said of anything in a cage, but for some reason it seems more wrong with birds.)

Usually though, it appears obvious that humans and animals can share the same house and be good for each other as well. And for this we should thank our ancestors a long time ago who realised that it would be a good strategy to encourage certain creatures into their houses. At a guess I would assume that the original reason for taming them was to help with hunting and pest control, but whether that is true or not, it’s something all pet lovers should be grateful to them for.

160 Years of Art at the St. Louis Mercantile Library

160 Years of Art at the St. Louis Mercantile Library

$33.23

This fully illustrated handbook presents highlights of the paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and folk and decorative arts that make up the Mercantile Library Association''s permanent collection and that reflect the institution''s past 160 years of cultural activity as well as its ongoing role as a museum for art of the American Midwest. The collection is particularly strong in artists who lived and worked in the city of St. Louis and the state of Missouri and who created works inspired by literary, political, and historical subjects. Numerous donations of sculpture have helped form a nucleus of works that brings to life the association''s literary collections, while the predominance of landscape paintings is a natural outgrowth of St. Louis''s nineteenth-century landscape movement that was tied to national and international art styles.

Art and Aesthetics in Chinese Popular Prints

Art and Aesthetics in Chinese Popular Prints

$116.43

Traditional woodblock prints preserve a Chinese folk art that has now nearly vanished. This book explores and explains the artistic and aesthetic bases of popular prints revealed in eighty-four late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century prints belonging to the London-based Muban Foundation.Woodblock printing was the principal method of producing inexpensive and colorful single-sheet images for mass consumption in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century China. Prints of this type are known today as New Year pictures because the demand for them peaked at New Year's time. However, the term popular print more accurately describes these works, whose subjects include deities and tutelary spirits, illustrations to stories and operas, and even contemporary political or revolutionary messages. The emphasis on the artistic aspects of these prints makes this publication uniquely appealing to Chinese art historians but also to those interested in Chinese anthropology, popular religion, Chinese and other folk art, and traditional crafts.Ellen J. Laing received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She was Maude I. Kerns Distinguished Professor of Oriental Art, University of Oregon and is currently Research Associate at the Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan. She has published numerous scholarly articles, books, and reference works on Chinese art.

Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater

Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater

$40.38

Shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution, Soviet Jewish theaters became catalysts for modernist experimentation. Working with avant-garde playwrights, actors, and producers in a new political environment, artists such as Marc Chagall, Natan Altman, Robert Falk, and Aleksandr Tyshler combined Russian folk art with elements of Cubo-Futurism and Constructivism into a bold new style. This collaboration gave rise to extraordinary productions with highly original stage designs that redefined the concept of theater itself. From the Jewish mythical and folkloric plays produced at Habima to the daring, expressionistic Yiddish dramas presented at the Moscow State Yiddish Theater (GOSET), this beautifully illustrated book chronicles the flourishing of Soviet Jewish theater in the 1920s and 1930s. Spanning such topics as Jewish culture and history in the Soviet Union, the volume includes stunning reproductions of Chagall’s celebrated theater murals; fascinating archival materials such as posters, prints, and playbills; designs for costumes and sets; and many other breathtaking works.

 ICON and Devotion

ICON and Devotion

$40

Icon and Devotion offers the first extensive presentation in English of the making and meaning of Russian icons. The craft of icon-making is set into the context of forms of worship that emerged in the Russian Orthodox Church in the mid-seventeenth century. Oleg Tarasov shows how icons have held a special place in Russian consciousness because they represented idealized images of Holy Russia. He also looks closely at how and why icons were made. Wonder-working saints and the leaders of such religious schisms as the Old Believers appear in these pages, which are illustrated with miniature paintings, lithographs and engravings never before published in the English-speaking world.By tracing the artistic vocabulary, techniques and working methods of icon painters, Tarasov shows how icons have been integral to the history of Russian art, influenced by folk and mainstream currents alike. As well as articulating the specifically Russian piety they invoke, he analyzes the significance of icons in the cultural life of modern Russia in the context of popular prints and poster design.

 Mysterium Fidei

Mysterium Fidei

$35

Mysterium Fidei, which translates to Mystery of Faith, is the new collection of art from Daniel Martin Diaz. His paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by devotional folk art, which he blends with archaic imagery and old-world aesthetics, immersed in the passionate imagery of his religion. He loves New Testament stories and the surreal visions they conjure; in this local 19th century mission, he was moved by the crude, darkened old Mexican religious paintings, a hybrid of European and vernacular Mexican art.

The Art of S. Clay Wilson

The Art of S. Clay Wilson

$35

THE ART OF S. CLAY WILSON is the long-awaited career retrospective of the most extreme of the Zap cartoonists of the late 1960s. A self-described ""graphic agoraphobe,"" Wilson draws manically dense scenes of lurid mayhem that rank among the seminal works of underground, counterculture American art. It's all here, from the classic chronicles of the Checkered Demon to salacious stories about the pirates, prostitutes, and poets that inhabit Wilson's divinely depraved world. The definitive collection of the art of legendary Zap comic artist S. Clay Wilson.Features 200 full-color images, including new work and previously unpublished prints commissioned for private collections.Introduction by R. Crumb touts Wilson's role as one of the originators of underground comix."Wilson was the strongest, most original artist of my generation that I had yet met. . . . There was something very familiar about the drawings, yet something entirely new, never before seen! It looked like folk art, like old-time tattoos, like some high school hotrodder's notebook drawings. They were rough, crazy, coarse, deeply American."-from R. Crumb's introductionReviews"To hell with Capt. Jack Sparrow, when are they going to make a movie about Cap'n Pissgums and his Pervert Pirates?. . . Even the least of the prints throb with diabolical energy and are ornamented by the kind of hardboiled captions you wish could be turned into movie dialogue."-San Jose Metro". . . rather rude (but very welcome). . . it's mesmerizing work, and hugely influential as well."-PW Daily

 The Projectionist

The Projectionist

$15

Gordon Brinckle (1915-2007) seemed like an ordinary mana modest and reserved husband and father living in an ordinary 1950s-era home in Middletown, Delaware. Known around town as the night projectionist at the local movie theater, it was the unusual way he spent his days that eventually brought him attention. In his free time, Brinckle meticulously constructed a miniature version of a grand movie palace in his basement. The Shalimar, as he called it, was not only fully functional (with nine authentic movie seats, a projection booth with a 16-mm projector, numerous speakers, and a working organ) but was also lushly designed and decorated with an obsessive attention todetail. Brinckle's "picture palace of renown," as he referred to it, adapted various theater styles of the twentieth century, boasting a marquee that distinctly recalls the 1960s; an auditorium decorated in the "semi-atmospheric" style of the 1930s, bringing the outdoors in through the use of fake foliage and wildlife; and three opulent working curtains. When filmmaker and photographer Kendall Messick, who used to live across the street from the Brinckle family as a boy, became reacquaintedwith his former neighbor during a visit home in 2001, he knew he had to document the theater and its one-of-a-kind creator. In The Projectionist, Messick captures every detail of Brinckle's colorful fantasy world, including Brinckle's original artwork, architectural plans, drawings, and linoleum prints of imaginary movie theaters, ticket stubs, and usher uniform designs. An essay by curator Brooke Davis Anderson of the American Folk ArtMuseum looks at Gordon's work in the context of outsider art, and a foreword by artist, curator, and author Mark Sloandiscusses Messick's photographic work.
